Who could have predicted that nickel would soar over 250% in less than 36 hours, breaching US$ 100,000 per tonne, and leading to a suspension of trading in the metal on the LME? Who, for that matter, could predict anything with any certainty in this crazy world?

In Barcelona, experts will try to make as much sense as possible out of the various elements that have created volatility across the metals spectrum: a lingering pandemic; badly damaged supply chains; a logistics nightmare; rising costs from virtually every quarter; and, to top it all, seismic geopolitical tensions as a result of the Ukraine/Russia conflict. How is demand standing up to this barrage of negativity? And are there any clues as to what might happen next?

In addition to discussing these crucial matters, the Division under the presidency of Dhawal Shah, Metco Ventures (India) has invited two guest speakers:

The first speaker is Tom Eng, Senior Vice President and Head of TOMRA Recycling, a world leader in sensor-based recycling sorting solutions. The company designs and manufactures sensor-based sorting machines for the recycling industry, enabling and optimizing the recovery of recyclable materials from waste and metal streams. Based in Asker, Norway, Mr Eng leads a global team of engineering and commercial experts.

In 2004, he joined the company, which at that time was operating under the name of Titech until it was acquired by TOMRA in 2004, as Marketing Manager before being promoted to his current position as Senior Vice President and Head of TOMRA Recycling in 2012. Tom has led the Recycling division’s expansion into Asia, America, and EMEA, consolidating the business’s world-leading position. Today, he concentrates on further strengthening the company’s position in its core segments and extending its market-leading position to new markets and applications.

His presentation will be based on a problem-solution approach by for instance highlighting the increasing demand for aluminium and pledges from brand owners and the industry to become carbon neutral, while offering solutions for the challenge of decreasing the carbon footprint and meet the demand of aforesaid brand owners. There will also be a brief explanation of TOMRA’s new X-TRACT technology, which reduces alloying elements to a minimum, removing magnesium and superlights to create a clean, furnace-ready aluminum fraction, X-Ray technology allowing for the upgrading of numerous materials, e.g. Zorba, Twitch, profiles and sheets, production scrap.

The second presentation will be given by a representative of La Farga, a major metallurgy company that manufactures and sells semi-finished copper products and their alloys for the electrical, metal packaging, railway, tubes, automotive, billets and special conductors markets. Topics under discussion are the dynamics of the copper market, covering pricing/demand/supply/production and copper scrap recycling/ material flows.

A subsequent panel discussion with the participation of both speakers and moderated by divisional board members Rick Dobkin (Shapiro Metals, USA) and Susie Burrage (Recycled Products, GBR) will give the audience the opportunity to ask pertinent questions and dive further into the various subjects.

There will also be a round-up of the latest BIR World Mirror on Non-Ferrous Metals by Murat Bayram (EMR, GBR), who will also comment on the latest EU policy on scrap exports (EU Waste Shipment Regulation).

Divisional President Shah comments: “Metal recycling business is undergoing a transformational change globally with increasing use of technology to derive performance and impact. For the first time, as part of our Non-Ferrous plenary session, we are presenting a programme which shall bring together the best of industry /market information - featuring a leading European copper smelter and a special feature on cutting-edge technology available in scrap sorting. It’s a “must-attend event” for every NF metal recycler!
